Cliona O’Connell — Transparent loops, or how strange is it to be an "I"
work in progress / Archa.lab residency

presentation

A public work-in-progress presentation of the Archa.lab residency of the Irish artist.

In an era of identity politics and individualism, where increasing categorisation and labelling deepens division, in trying to define our identity we fall short. We struggle to finish the sentence "I am". The words we arrive at are unsatisfactory. In place of asking "Who am I?", instead we ask "What is an I?". Where does our sense of self come from? Are we just a story we tell ourselves? In asking these questions we are exploring the idea that what connects us all is the mystery of consciousness and the paradox of self, and it is this inter-connectedness that enables our survival. Transparent loops, or how strange is it to be an "I" is a collaboration between Irish Theatre maker, Cliona O'Connell and German Composer & Musician Jan Henrik Rau, exploring the relationship of music to consciousness and the possibilities of using music and voice as dramatis personae on stage.

This documentary theatre project is conceived as a collaboration between the Irish theatre artist Cliona O’Connell and the German musician and composer Jan Henrik Rau. The artists explore the relationship between music and conscience, as well as the possibilities of using music and the voice as a dramatic “character” on-stage.
