The Calm After the Storm

work in progress

The Calm After the Storm is a walkabout performance workshop for a small number of audience, created for Přístav, in Karlín. Here, we come across materials which have left their initial purpose behind, but which have now found a new way of existing: old train tracks become benches, swimming costumes become decorations, and concrete debris become ships for children to play on, always reminding us of Karlín’s relationship to Vltava river. Just like any other port city, Přístav, meaning ‘port’, becomes a site of renegotiation and constant renewal. At its heart, Přístav is an endeavour to re-use our old waste and grow something new from things we have broken. In our current climate crisis, Přístav is an indication to what new port cities might look like in the future. This workshop is a space to reflect on our relationship with the earth’s resources, and an opportunity to think about the non-human world differently.

Lily (UK) and Kristýna (CZ) are recent graduates of the Theatre Studies department at the University of Glasgow where they met and started working together. Lily likes performing interactively on the street or in unusual places and her research focuses on carnival and the grotesque. Kristýna is currently researching the politics of atmosphere and affect in contemporary performance. After completing the Archa International Theatre Summer School in 2018, Kristýna applied for the Archa.lab Art Residency and invited Lily to work with her. Inspired by the new Performance Ecology and Heritage Hub established at the University of Glasgow in 2018, and excited by what they found at Přístav 18600 upon arrival in Prague, they are bringing their different interests together to create something new for both of them, a site-specific workshop centred around ecology.
