Ana Fosca
Whether we call the Danish musician Linn Hvid’s music Death Industrial, Dark Ambient, or Drone, her music is for certain hanging in the ethereal state between genres. The artist, coming from the noise scene surrounding the Copenhagen venue Mayhem, has been developing her alter ego, “Ana Fosca,” for several years in this openminded environment, finally introducing it with her debut album “SOMA,” on the Russian label Nazlo Records in 2020. At Alternativa, the current resident at the Mayhem club will make her Czech premiere.
Kapital Band 1
After sixteen years the duo Kapital Band 1, constituted of Nicholas Bussmann and percussionist Martin Brandlmayr, returns to festival Alternativa. During their performances they create random rhythmical structures and instead of rehearsed parts, the duo relies on concentration, intuition, and improvisation skills, all while keeping the structure of a classic song. Their debut album 2CD has been given a nod at the prestigious Prix Ars Electronica.
Raw Deal
In the vein of improvised krautrock located in the Czech Republic, we can hardly find a band more authentic than Raw Deal. On the roster of established Czech underground label Stoned to Death (Pacino, Dingo, Šimanský Niesner, and more), this trio stands out as a symbol of instrumental skilfulness and engulfing atmosphere of uninterrupted live sets with borderline rock’n’roll ferociousness and acid madness.
Félicia Atkinson
One of the leading figures in current French avant-garde, a visual artiste, experimental composer, poet and publisher, Félicia Atkinson, will return to Prague after twelve years. In her work she explores improvisation, concentrated listening, silence, noise, musique concrete, nature, abstraction, and language. Her last regular record “Flower and the Vessel,” was created during her pregnancy. The multi-layered, sophisticated production containing spoken word, whispering, and at times, ASMR-type elements, revealed a sound that attracted attention of prominent media publishers. The recording was featured on the 2019 album charts of magazines such as The Wire and The Quietus.
BCAA System
Where many others rely on retro aesthetics, the Prague artist collective BCAA System instead presents a vision of the future. Originally a web platform for DJ streams, they have now become a multidisciplinary association for artists working with both visual art and club production. This open laboratory, rather than a “clear boundaries operating section” of music industry, also strongly reflects upon ecological activism. Their project No~one Is an Island, nominated for the Vinyla award in the Achievement of the Year category, compiled post-club production of prominent Czech producents into a digital compilation, a short movie and an art exhibition for Art Gallery Brno.
Zangezi
Zangezi is a quintet accompanied by a “visual artist" and a "sound designer" that strives for an artificial but organic sound. Each instrument is amplified and processed using filters and live algorithms, making the difference between acoustic and electric instruments indistinguishable, and creating a new type of of genre beyond experimental chamber music.
